Artist's Statement
My work consists of hand-built porcelain objects that form complex spaces through the use of animated three-dimensional surfaces. The forms are the product of natural variation produced through the repetition of forms. Once constructed, the pieces are fired into a state of vitrification, and what was transient become permanent.
The “spaces in between” are the ones that interest me the most- what the Japanese call “ka”- like sky between buildings, ka is characterized by “consciousness of place” and “space as substance.”
We are surrounded by space and energy— both can be visible or invisible, depending on their state or condition. The energy around us gets trapped in the empty place between. My work captures its artistic essence in order to help to articulate for viewers something that often goes unnoticed are acknowledged as they observe and record the physical world.
